The Truth is a Cave in The Black Mountains

The Truth is a Cave in The Black Mountains
By Neil Gaiman Illustrated by Eddie Campbell
Published By Headline
ISBN 978-1-4722-2107-0
My Edition Published in: 2014
Number of Pages- 73
Fave Quote: "You Ask me if I can Forgive Myself"
The Blurb:" And so begins The Truth is A Cave in the Black Mountains, A haunting story of family, the other world and a search for hidden treasure. This gorgeous full colour illustrated book version was born of a unique collaboration between Sunday Times Bestselling author Neil Gaiman and renowned artist Eddie Campbell, Who brought to vivid life the characters and landscape of Gaiman's award winning story. In this volume the talents and vision of two great creative geniuses come together in a glorious explosion of colour and shadow, memory and regret, vengeance and ultimately love."

My Thoughts:  I would like to Thank Headline for sending me this beautiful stunning book. I have read books but not books that combine pictures and words in a way that brings the book alive. This 73 page book tells the story of Calum MacInnes asking himself "You ask me if I can forgive myself" and this starts a journey through the Highlands of Scotland with a unnamed mysterious man and they meet a few other people along the way The book is set in Jacobite times and the illustrations reflect that it is a very dark but enjoyable book this book deffiantley is for adults and it did scare me a little . The plot of this book I just did not get through out reading this I was thinking to myself am I really meant to get this and this is were the stunning illustrations by Eddie Campbell bring the plot to life and make you understand the plot a bit better and by the end of reading this book I felt that I did understand what the plot is about. The book combines words pictures and a comic strip and for me that enhances the reading experience its a great way to engage with the reader I loved the illustrations by Eddie Campbell they are art work in there own right. I love Neil Gaiman's work its always interesting what you will get when you open a book by him and yes I was surprised and excited and transported to a beautiful place. If you love Neil Gaiman's work or are a great fan of art or like me love pictures and words that tell a story then please do pick up this book and just soak up how beautifully written and crafted it is I for one will be reading this again. This book gets 5/5 stars even if you don't get the plot :). If you would like more detailed thoughts to this book please do see my Book Tube video hear :)

The Witches

The Witches
By: Roald Dahl
Published By: Puffin Books
ISBN: 978-0-141-32264-3
My Edition Published in: 2007
Number of Page: 201
Fave Quote: “It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.”
The Blurb "Witches really are detestable breed. They disguise themselves as lovely ladies, when secretly they want to squish and squelch all the wretched children they despise. Luckily one boy and his grandmother know how to recognize these vile creatures- but can they get rid of them for good? "

My Thoughts Wow what can I say about this book. This was my first time reading this book I don't know why I didn't read it as a child maybe I thought the book would be scary but it isn't. The book follows a unnamed child and his grandma who live in Norway and his grandma starts the story by talking about Witches and what they have done to children in the past some of witch is not very nice. So the Boy and his grandma under doctors orders go to Bournemouth for a holiday a nice sea side holiday or so they think unfortunately a group of witches have decided to hold there annual general meeting and because they are witches and they hate children they devise a plan to get rid of all the children of England by turning them into mice and apparently these witches can smell you out and think that all children smell like "dogs droppings" unfortunately for the boy and another boy called Bruno they both get turned into mice and its up to them of stop the witches and the grand high witch from carrying out this plan together with the Boy's grandma and they have fun along the way. This book freaked me out while i was reading this the illustrations of the witches disguising themselves as granny and then peeling off there faces gave me shivers down my spine Roald Dhal deffiantley knows how to write Witches and at the same time Quentin Blake beautiful illustrations of the witches and the grand high witch in particular did have the scare factor. It is a Shame that Roald Dhal didn't write a squeal to this book the ending felt unfinished somehow and does leave scope for another book to follow the boy as a mouse and his grandma to stop the witches altogether but in a way its great that the ending can leave children guessing what will happen next . You can tell that this story was written in a time were smoking is allowed to be written in a children's story and The granny smoking a cigar was by far for me a really funny thing reading this in 2014 I can not imagine any granny smoking a cigar and this is why i love Roald Dhals books and stories so much they are lovely books to read even if some do have the scare factor. This is by fare my favorite book about witches that I have read and also the fact its set in Bournemouth were i live is awesome. I would deffiantley recommend this story to any adult and child alike just as long as you do not read it at night you are fine. I give this a mousetastic 4/5 stars

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory By Roald Dahl

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
By: Roald Dahl
Published By Puffin Books
ISBN 978-0-141-32271-1
My Edition Published 2007
Number of Pages 190
Fave Quote: “Everything in this room is edible. Even I'm edible. But, that would be called cannibalism. It is looked down upon in most societies.”
The Blurb:" Charlie Bucket Loves Chocolate. And Mr Willy Wonka, the most wondrous inventor in the world, is opening the gates of his amazing chocolate factory to five lucky children. It's the prize of a lifetime! Gobstoppers, wriggle sweets and a river of melted chocolate delight await- Charlie needs just one Golden Ticket and these delicious treats could all be his"

My Thoughts:  I am sitting hear and struggling to write a review for this book there is no words to describe how wonderful and exciting and how well written this book is. I am 24 years old and this was a Reread for me and I loved reading this more now then i did when I was a child. It felt like was reading this for the first time finding out about Charlie getting caught up in the will he wont he get a golden ticket moment to hold your breath as you find out who the children are my emotional moment for me was when Charlie find the last golden ticket that for me was a happy dance moment I felt all the emotion that Charlie felt in the book when he found that ticket and I couldn't wait to rediscover the Chocolate Factory all over again. The reason why I loved this book is that Roald Dhal teaches you that if you are naughty, spolit demand everything then you will always get your Just desserts and the Children in this book got just that my fave part will always be when Violet gets turned into a blueberry. The illustrations in this book are superb and bring the book to life. I think Charlie is a well deserved hero in this story. I am so happy that this book has lasted all these years and it just shows that people still go back and read this classic story for me it brought back the excitement and to go back into a world of chocolate and everlasting sweets is just inspiring. I would recommend this book to everyone who has not read a Roald Dhal book believe me you are missing out. I have this book a chocolatetastic 5/5 stars on goodreads
